Voice Department

Core Philosophy

There are so many reasons to sing: artistry, entertainment, worship, self-expression, and just plain fun. Whatever your reason, the South Shore Conservatory voice department is here to encourage and guide your growth as a singer. We are committed to excellent vocal education that brings out your musical best while nurturing your “voice” in its widest sense.  With private lessons, group classes, ensembles, recitals, open mics, and more, there are many opportunities to join in the song.

Voice Department Chair Jennifer Pearl is a vocal educator dedicated to helping students of all ages discover their true voice. She emphasizes healthy technique, phrasing, ear training, and musical understanding. A skilled performer and conductor, Jen has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Riverside Church, and Harvard University, and specializes in Yiddish folk songs, German Lieder, and African-American Spirituals. She joined SSC in 2019.

Private Lessons

Private lessons provide the highest level of individualized instruction and mentoring. Since the relationship between teacher and student is integral to the learning experience, we carefully match students with instructors at all levels, beginners to advanced. Private lessons are particularly useful to students with targeted goals such as auditions (e.g., community choirs, SEMSBA, college entrance) and performance (open mics, recitals, shows). Voice Evaluations and Trial Lessons

We offer a voice evaluation service to determine which of our offerings best suit your needs.  Appointments with the voice department chair are 30 minutes in length and cost $45.00.  These “getting-to-know-you” mini-lessons provide lots of opportunity for questions and discussion so you get a sense of what voice study is about at SSC.
