College Music Study and the Admissions Process

As you look ahead to continuing your involvement in music at the college level, come learn more about degree options, the application process, auditions, and more!


Dr. Alex Powell will talk about studying music at the college level, including the various majors, minors, and degree options to consider when looking at schools. He will draw on his extensive experience in admissions at the New England Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Longy School of Music of Bard College to outline the application and audition process.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER: Dr. Alex Powell has nearly twenty years of experience in college and conservatory administration. He served for many years as the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the New England Conservatory. He has also provided admissions leadership for the Cleveland Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Dr. Powell has given numerous presentations on college admissions in the performing arts and has been a featured panelist at many conferences. He served as an adjudicator for Classical Singer, NEC concerto competitions, Boston Lyric Opera, and VoicesBoston, and has been on panels for hundreds of conservatory auditions. He is founder of Powell Educational Counseling, which provides independent college counseling support along with consulting for conservatories, colleges, and non-profits.
