Guitar & Ukulele Department
Classical Guitar
For students ages seven and up we offer traditional classical guitar lessons. The acoustic guitar has nylon strings as opposed to metal strings used by guitars designed for popular and folk music. Classical guitar players use their fingers, and not a guitar pick, to pluck individual strings. Students learn music notation, and play classical repertoire.
Suzuki Guitar
Using a classical guitar, children as young as three explore a learning method and philosophy, for young children, which approaches music as if it were a language. Children learn language by listening and speaking first, followed by reading and writing. Suzuki adheres to this natural sequence. It also focuses on parent involvement and group experience.
Jazz/Rock/Pop Guitar
SSC also offers private lessons for students playing contemporary music on acoustic, electric, and bass guitar

Guitar Department Chair Joseph Scott has been performing on guitar, lute, and in vocal ensembles in a wide range of styles since his teens. As a vocalist member of the rock band Ford Theatre, he recorded two albums for ABC Records in the late 60s, and he continued to play guitar and sing in rock and folk music until becoming serious about the classical guitar in his early twenties. After a number of short periods of study with private teachers, he completed a Bachelor of Music degree at Boston Conservatory, and has been performing in the Boston to Cape Cod region ever since.
